There are times, like now it would seem, when I can’t remember childhood very well, when I feel as if there’s a gulf widening between what was then and what is now. Which is odd, in a way, because I’ve always thought I have a pretty decent memory; I am a sponge for all things inconsequential, details get lodged in my brain and never leave, and I remember things my brain has no earthly business holding on to. But sometimes the chasm widens and I can’t access those details — or, at best, I can only view them from afar.
